Eva Black

Folded
As Eva describes herself - "I began the piece by collecting paper, using all found paper - paper that was given to me, paper I had collected over time, paper from old artworks, paper bags, or paper I bought from old bookstores. The piece has about 3,500 triangles and is about 12 x 13'."

Susan Cutts

Cherish
Susan uses her own handmade paper working from the raw fibre using traditional European equipment and techniques.  The process of papermaking is vitally important to her work.  The complex structure of the fibres enables her to create sculptural pieces without the use of glue, stitching or armatures.

Chiharu Shiota : Art Installation

La Maison
What a wonderfully atmospheric piece - it's almost like a drawing and I wondered if that's where the inspiration came from for this work. Not sure who the artist is .....

I found out!  Great work Linnie - it is, as you said, Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota who was born in Osaka, Japan and now lives and works in Berlin.  Her website is well worth a visit.

Creative Interviews : Steven Rodrig

Steven Rodrig, originally born in Havana, Cuba, describes himself as an inventive and environmentally conscious artist. He’s always been fascinated in experimenting with unconventional materials to create art. His imagination and innate technical process evolved while studying mechanical structure at his NY school.

Steven’s innovative sculpture, which he refers to as “PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Mixed Media”, is created from recycling and restructuring circuit and electronic parts. His subjects range from insects, flowers and still life to intricate cityscapes.   New York is his base.

It's a very unique art form and one that I had little knowledge of so I was delighted when Steven accepted my invitation to get involved with my 'creative interviews' series and a great big thank you to him for contributing!

Describe yourself in five words and how would your friends describe you (in five)!!
Myself: unique innovative resourceful artistic obsure
Others: precise creative decisive calibrate odd
Data Head
How has work and this year been for you – anything new on the boil for 2012
Now that I have conquered the human head shape in my RONIX sculpture, I plan on expanding on that. I need to be the first to create a female torso.
Spider
What do you love most about what you do and is there a down side
I love that whatever I create is the first of its kind since no other artist has attempted my approach to PCB sculpting (yet). So far no down side other than the predicable cuts and scrapes

In your portfolio what are you most happy with
Apocalyptic Data Hunter : RONIX is my crowning achievement.  It broke new ground on how to approach the human form using PCBs

Organic Data Transfer
What’s your perfect working day like
Finding the perfect computer PCB board in the dumpster and not running out of coffee through the day.

Who influences you creatively
There is an artist that I admire for his creativity, his name is Kris Kuksi. I had the opportunity to meet him and give him one of my early Data Books. His work is amazing and inspirational.
Throne
Have you ever or do you have a PLAN B
If I don't make it as the world's best PCB sculpture, I plan on working at McDonalds, this way I can work at the fry station and eat them all day long.
Ornament
Where’s your own favorite place to work and why
In my living room, I don't have a studio (yet), has a TV, radio and close the Loo
Sandal
How much time do you or can you give to make a piece of work
I have spent as little as 1 week as much as 7 months. The process really depends on the right PCB, I could settle for any PCB, but then I could not look at the piece knowing that I didn't make it perfect.
Kris Kuksi
Who do you think I should interview next
I really think you should see Kris Kuksi's work and interview him, I know you'll be impressed.

Creative Interviews : Cecilia Levy

Swedish artist and designer Cecilia Levy achieved an MFA in Graphic Design and went on to work as a teacher in graphic design at the College of Arts and Crafts in Gothenburg. Longing to work more by hand she studied bookbinding for a year at Leksands Folkhögskola.

Combining the professions of graphic design, bookbinding and illustration, she does commission work and is a member of the arts and crafts cooperative Kaleido in Uppsala, where her paper products are for sale.

Cecilia teaches bookbinding to art and design students in schools around Sweden. As an artist she works mainly with paper, creating 3-dimensional objects from old books or drawing in pencil or ink. Her art is exhibited in solo and group shows in Sweden and abroad. So it's a great big thank you to Cecilia for giving me some of her precious time.

What’s your local area like in terms of supporting creatives
I'm a member of an arts and crafts cooperative (Kaleido) in one of Sweden's largest cities. Twenty members run a shop and gallery in together, taking turns working there, selling our handmade products. It's great to be part of something bigger.

How would you describe yourself in five words
curious, accurate, adaptable, responsive, humble

Saucer
Give me the names of 3 objects or things you dislike most and why
• gadgets/toys that come with childrens meals/magazines – I don't approve of advertising directed at children
• cheap bad quality products made to break. To think that somebody, somewhere in the world, is actually designing and manufacturing something intended not to hold...
• golf, water scooter (i.e. jet ski) and such egoistical “sports”. Devastation of nature and marine life.
Tolstoy
Tell me about something you've achieved
Being a parent.

What’s your ideal working day.
Wake up at 6.15. Breakfast with husband Mattias and our two daughters, Olivia and Rosa (15 and 12 yrs old). The girls go off to school and Mattias and I go for a long brisk walk in the woods with our dog, cairn terrier Asta. We then have tea and biscuits, and after that my workday begins. I'm a slow starter...
Necklace
Who influences you creatively.
The web is my main source of inspiration, can't mention one specific person.

Are you usually late, early or right on time
Late...
Black Ball
Do you like to shop
Yes and no. I love second hand, vintage and thrift shops. Handmade products and good quality. But I don't like excessive consumption – the 'shop til you drop' mentality.

Where would you go in the world for inspiration
Japan
Exhibition
What piece of work are you most proud of
I'm rather proud of my paper objects.

Close - up detail
What would you like to develop further or learn to do
Learn more about paper and explore it's possibilities.

Jennifer Kinsley Interview

Creative Interviews takes me closer to home this week interviewing Jennifer Kinsley an award winning artist & sculptor. She is originally from El Salvidor, but now lives in Scotland. Jennifer has a score of prestigious awards under her creative belt as well as a wide range of exhibitions all over Scotland. I do believe that Jennifer has given us a sneak peek at her latest work!
A huge thank you for taking the time to answer these questions Jennifer and I wish you continuing success in all your ventures!
Describe yourself in five words and how would your friends describe you
Wise, Angel, cool, loving, happy.
What do you love most about what you do and is there a down side
I am connected to the force when I make and no there aren’t any.
In your portfolio what are you most happy with
My work is an insight of how I found the force, they are stepping stones, arrows.

What’s your ideal working day
Mondays, I am refreshed and ready after a lovely weekend being a mum.
Who influences you creatively
I make a point of not looking at other peoples work, because they have already found what I have been looking for. We are all unique. The question I have been asking my self for years is, whom am I? what can I create that is unique to this world?

What’s your PLAN B
There is no plan B this is it I am ready, I have been waiting for this moment my whole life. I came across this quote the other day (always haunted by the thought that I am not good enough) “I raised you up for this purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Romans 9/17.
Where’s your favourite place to work
My shed, it’s the sunniest part of the garden.

How is work (and this year) for you at the moment.
I am rocking!!!
Any advice for Ziggy
He is in the dark once he learns to seek the light he will start to feel better. Get the book call the Power of Now then practice not thinking like your life depends on it and you will find the force.

Oooh! and above is a sneak peek at one of Jennifer's latest pieces - thank you so much for sending this to me and I can't wait to see it finished especially as your work goes through such a series of difficult processes before you can say it's ready to exhibit!
